There is no limit to the opportunities available when you are a Lion.
Alison Ware is a harpist, but no ordinary harpist. She is a Certified Clinical Musician, Registered Counsellor, Creative Art Therapist, and has qualifications in mindfulness meditation, art therapy and spiritual care. And her skills and experience make her unique in being able to honour, respect and support people experiencing physical, emotional and spiritual pain. She does this by conducting a therapeutic harp program provided through Harp Care Music which is funded by the Canberra Hospital Auxiliary.
Those who have heard a harp being played, and most of us have, will know the instant feeling of relaxation that it evokes, and for patients in hospitals, especially those in palliative care, the sounds promote comfort, pain relief, release of emotion and grieving, deep rest relaxation and even facilitate sleep. And much more.
The Lions Club of Canberra City recently enjoyed a demonstration of Alison’s marvellous talents as she played two types of harp, both of which had been made by her obviously very talented husband, Chris. And it was not difficult to imagine the relief that would be felt by patients as their anxiety and stress were reduced, or how their pain was lessened as they were distracted by the harp’s pleasant tones and vibrations.
Alison is providing a service, which, like the service of so many Lions, has the intention of enhancing the quality of life of others. She is unique in that her harp playing is part of a suite of skills that harmonise her musical artistry with her counselling and spiritual care, and cover hospital visits and elsewhere – wherever emotional support is wanted and welcomed.
Harp Care Music is funded through donations to the Canberra Hospital Foundation, and provides for the wellbeing of patients and staff alike in a very interesting way. And a heartfelt thankyou from the Lions of Canberra City Club to both Alison and Chris for their work, and the pleasure and release they bring through their service.
